Phoenix Ward by election this week

With just a few days to go, the Phoenix Ward by-election is shaping up to be a close contest between Labour and the Liberal Democrat candidate Andrew Ellwood. Andrew lost out by just four votes in May but many former Labour voters are switching to the LibDems as they feel betrayed by the Labour Councillor resigning after just three months in the job. With Andrew Ellwood's record of hard work for the ward over the last four years, it is an easy switch for them to make.

draft planning reforms pose serious risk to local communities says Lib Dem Leader on County Council

Leicestershire is to have two representatives on a national board responsible for the Environment and housing issues in Local Government. Following internal party elections, the Leader of the Liberal Democrats on Leicestershire County Council, Simon Galton, will join David Parsons on LGA's Environment and Housing Programme Board. One of the Board's key responsibilities is planning which means it will be responding to the Government's controversial proposals contained in the draft National Planning Policy Framework.
