Go Green, not Nuclear, urge Liberal Democrats

Ahead of the publication of the Government's energy white paper, the Liberal Democrats are urging the Government to reject nuclear power and adopt radical plans for increasing the use of renewable energy and reducing overall energy use.

Planning paper set to further disempower local communities

Gaining permission for major building projects such as airport terminals and power stations would become quicker under government plans. Communities Secretary Ruth Kelly wants to replace large planning inquiries in England with an independent commission. The planning white paper also suggests minor projects like conservatories and home extensions should no longer need planning permission where there is little impact on neighbours.

Blair subservient to worst presidency in history, says Jimmy Carter

Former US president Jimmy Carter unleashed a torrent of criticism against George Bush and Tony Blair over the weekend, in which he accused the Bush presidency of being the "worst in history" and said Mr Blair's support had been abominable and subservient. Mr Carter said of the Bush years: "I think as far as the adverse impact on the nation around the world, this administration has been the worst in history."

Damage To Cutty Sark Great Loss To UK Heritage

Commenting on the fire that has severely damaged the Cutty Sark this morning, Liberal Democrat Heritage Spokesman Paul Holmes MP said: "This is a very sad occurrence and I hope that the damage can be restored. Nevertheless, the loss of the original timbers is a great loss to our heritage and history of 19th century international trade. The Cutty Sark is an important part of British merchant navy heritage and is one of the very last remaining tea clippers powered by sail. The Cutty Sark Trust has worked hard to restore the ship and now they must be devastated."
