The first-ever H G Wells Festival in Folkestone and Sandgate is being held on 18-20 September 2009 and is packed full with exhibitions, walks, talks, dinner and the presentation of the £1000 prize for the Short Story competition by Professor Dominic Wells, great-grandson of HG Wells.
Liberal Democrats from Staffordshire Moorlands will be attending the national Party Conference in Bournemouth next week. The Conference, entitled "A fresh start for Britain - Choosing a different, better future" will be the last major conference before next year's General Election.
Liberal Democrat Campaigner Jonathan Webber has called for a Freedom Bill to guarantee our civil liberties. Jonathan said "The last twenty years has seen the steady erosion of civil liberties in Britain and a generation of children are growing up as strangers to the treasured freedoms on which Britain once prided itself whilst the Government is spending billions of pounds collecting more and more of people's personal data. Britain now has the largest DNA database in the world, including data on a million innocent people, there is one CCTV camera for every fourteen people in Britain and surveillance powers designed to fight serious crime and terrorism have been used over 10,000 times by councils in the last five years."
This morning Liberal Democrat Conference discussed globalisation and reaffirmed their commitment to internationalism whilst debating how the UK can thrive economically.
The Liberal Democrats held a rally as part of the conference this evening, one of the stars of the show was Birmingham Perry Barr Candidate Councillor Karen Hamilton.
