London 2012 Olympic Torch will visit Birmingham

Birmingham has been confirmed as one of the host destinations for the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay next summer. Liberal Democrat Councillor Martin Mullaney, Birmingham City Council's Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture, said "The Torch Relay is the curtain raiser to what we know will be a huge and spectacular sporting event, so I'm proud that Birmingham has been selected as an overnight stay for the Olympic flame."

Ashtead Independents defy electors’ preference and support Conservatives

At the Annual Meeting of Mole Valley District Council, the votes of the Ashtead Independent group were decisive in electing Conservative James Friend as Council Leader - even though his party is not the largest on the Council. James Friend then announced a coalition between the 2 groups to form a joint administration.

Getting the Popular Italian Statue Back on Display

When the statue donated to Bedford by the town's Italian community was unveiled at the time of Bedford's first Italian Festival in 2009, the response was overwhelmingly positive. It is remarkable for any new piece of public art, usually the cause of much debate , discussion and often controversy, to be met with so much praise and so few complaints! What a terrible shame it was, then, when the statue had to be moved from its original location near the Town Bridge, due to repeated acts of vandalism. The statue was the work of artist Professore Giuseppe Martignetti, who produced it for the town which he said had given so much to his family, and it was appalling that mindless acts of violence caused it to have to be put into storage. I am therefore delighted that it is now going back on display once again, after we worked with the Italian Festival Committee to identify a suitable, safe location where it can be enjoyed by residents and visitors to Bedford. It will sit on Greyfriars roundabout, near the bus station

Another kick in the teeth for Wiltshire young drivers

The Driving Standards Agency has announced that the Theory Test centre in Bath will close on August 31st because it doesn't make enough profit. Young drivers will have to go to Bristol or Swindon to take their theory tests. Ten other centres across the country will also close as the DSA, which has a monopoly on the driving test business, continues to minimise its costs and its service to customers.
