Former Bromley Councillor, Tony Phillips won the vacant Totnes Town Council seat for the Bridgetown ward last Thursday with an overwhelming victory over an Independent candidate who put out no literature and did not even bother to turn up for the count! Tony polled 255 votes against 99 in a contest where the turnout was affected by appalling weather conditions.
Liberal Democrat Candidate, Tony Phillips, today won the vacant Bridgetown seat on Totnes Town Council with a large majority. Tony, has 8 years experience of being a Councilor and lives in the ward. He is looking forward to working hard for the people of Totnes and Bridgetown in particular. Speaking after his victory Tony said:
Today's announcement by Environment Secretary, Margaret Becket, that the commercial growing of one variety of GM maize would be given the go ahead goes against the overwhelming advice from all sectors. Scientific studies, Parliamentary committees and the public consultation have all shown that the risks involved are too great. Before the maize can be grown, however, it has to be placed on the UK seed list which requires the agreement of the Welsh Assembly and the Scottish Parliament, neither of which is certain. There is also an opportunity for people to register objections.
Lib Dems in Shepway are launching a community wide campaign to stop the Labour Government shutting down Shepway. The campaign has started with the placing of a full page advert in the local press.
Shepway Liberal Democrats have announced that they will be contesting the elections taking place in June to elect Town Councils for Folkestone and Sandgate.
The resignation of District Councillor Tony Baker from the Liberal Democrats has come as "no surprise" to the rest of the Lib Dem group.
