Buses: success at last

The new 541 bus service now travels along Ivy Chimneys and Centre Drive to St Margaret's Hospital. Residents need no longer change buses in the High Street or take a taxi. Also, the H1 bus now travels from Epping Station to St Margaret's Hospital and on to Princess Alexandra Hospital.

Liberal Democrats reveals £9million extra cells bill

A parliamentary answer given to Liberal Democrat MP David Heath has revealed that the National Offender Management Service has set aside £9million for the use of police and court cells for prisoners in 2007-08, because of overcrowding in prisons. Today it was revealed that an acute shortage of judges is causing long delays in bringing criminal trials to court, putting even more pressure on overcrowded prisons and delaying justice for victims of crime.

8 million Iraqis need urgent aid

According to a report by Oxfam and the NGO Coordination Committee in Iraq, one third of the Iraqi population needs emergency aid because of the humanitarian crisis caused by war and ongoing violence. The report disclosed that around 8 million Iraqis are in urgent need of water, sanitation, food and shelter. It also warned of a humanitarian crisis that had escalated since the 2003 invasion.

Joint Committee on Human Rights opposes terror detention plans

The parliamentary joint committee on human rights has found that there is not enough evidence to support extending the 28-day limit on holding terrorism suspects before charge. Any extension should be based on clear evidence, not the idea that a need "may arise at some time in the future", said the committee of MPs and peers. It also recommended the production of an annual report on police use of the power to detain without charge beyond 14 days, and a parliamentary-approved upper limit on pre-charge detention.
