Letter to the Editor: Opposing Tory Tax Hikes

Thanks to Cllr Carey for pointing out in last weeks Herald that the Liberal Democrats opposed the Shepway Council budget. The Conservative budget saw a massive increase in the expenditure on "strategy and leadership", but precious little for improving front line services such as street cleaning or safety. The budget also saw the Council Tax raised as far as possible without capping, some Council fees raised hugely, and the introduction of the Councils new £35 Garden Tax on recycling. What's not to oppose?

Get your priorities right says Rochdale MP

Paul Rowen, Lib Dem Work and Pension's Shadow Minister has written to energy company E.On to ask them to get 'their priorities right'. Paul has acted after uncovering that E.On spent £32 million sponsoring the FA Cup and only £4.4 million on helping its elderly customers. The figure of £4.4 million is derisory when you consider that in the last year alone the German firm made a profit of £777 Million.

Rowen calls on Co-op to take over 'goldmine'

Rochdale MP Paul Rowen has written to the Chief Executive of the Co-operative Group asking them to look into taking over an empty shop on 'The Cray' in the Town. Mr Rowen reacted after being contacted by Councillor Jean Ashworth and speaking to local residents. The shop was closed after the previous owner fell behind with her rent. It is owned by Rochdale Boroughwide Housing - an arms length management organisation.

TORIES INSIST BIGGER POTHOLES ARE GOOD

Conservatives at Essex County Council insist it is good practice to allow potholes to get more than double their present depth before they will be fixed. The Tories rejected a claim by the Liberal Democrat group on the council, that roads are likely to deteriorate under the new strategy. The Lib Dems pushed for a formal meeting to discuss the issue, but the group was eventually voted down by the Conservative members.
