Pensions reform urgently needed, say Dundee Liberal Democrats

Dundee Liberal Democrats have today (Thursday 11th May) condemned the failure of the "New Labour" Government's pensions policy following the government's admission that its target of paying 3 million pensioner households Pension Credit by March 2006 will not be met.

"Government waiting targets nonsense" says Lib Dem MP

Commenting on the details of the maximum 18 week waiting list target announced by the Department of Health, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, Steve Webb MP said: "Despite the Government's assurances, too many people are still waiting far too long for NHS treatment. It is outrageous for the Government to boast about hitting its 18 week target when their definition excludes some of the treatments with the longest waits. "It is nonsense for the Government to claim they are abolishing waiting in the NHS. For some services, ranging from fertility treatment to hearing aids, some people are currently waiting years."

The Folkestone Herald reports that mobile speed cameras will be operating in Shepway next week. The vehicles will be in the district on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday week commencing 15th May.

Liberal Democrats warn of democracy crisis

A credibility crisis is building in Britain's political institutions, says Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell. Reform of the voting system and the House of Lords were "roadblocks" to getting people more involved in democracy, said Sir Menzies. He was speaking at a conference about democracy in the wake of the local elections, when turnout was 36%. The conference was organised by the Power Commission, which recently reported on how to get people more involved with politics.
