COUNCIL KEEN TO NOTIFY NEIGHBOURS ABOUT LICENSING APPLICATIONS

Local people, who could be affected by applications for alcohol and gambling licences, will now be directly notified before each application is considered, following a decision made by Woking Borough Council's Executive at its meeting last week (Thursday 28 September 2006).

Tory grass roots remain unconcerned about the environment

The Tories are finding their new, environmentally friendly image hard to sell to their delegates at their Conference. Delegates voted to throw out the motion: "cheap flights are a false economy". Of course, this will make no difference whatsoever as the Conservative party does not yet have policies for its grassroots to reject.

MP steps up campaign to stop cuts to North West rail services

Local MP Tim Farron has demanded a meeting with Secretary of State for Transport, Douglas Alexander, as he steps up his campaign against cuts to rail services in the North West. As part of the negotiations for the new Cross Country franchise, the Department for Transport is proposing terminating all services from the North West to the South West and South coast at Birmingham and reducing the number of services from the Windermere and Furness branch lines to Manchester Airport.

We cannot shirk from our responsibility on Guantanamo - Campbell

Responding to reports that the British Government has turned down an offer from the US to the return nearly all British residents held at Guantanamo Bay, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Sir Menzies Campbell said "What is the point of the Attorney General and Lord Chancellor condemning Guantanamo as legally unacceptable when the British Government, at the same time, is unwilling to take back UK residents who are detained there?"
