Liberal Democrats call for flood protection for infrastructure

After Monday night's operation to save Walham electricity substation, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary Chris Huhne has said that this week's flooding has demonstrated the urgency of protecting key infrastructure. Firefighters, military personnel and civilian engineers battled for two days to prevent the substation in Gloucester going underwater and power being cut to a quarter of a million homes across the south-west. Six severe flood warnings are still in place, in Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire.

Electric Blanket Safety Testing

Kent Trading Standards are offering free electric blanket safety checks to local residents between 1 - 4 October 2007 at Ashford, Lyminge (nr Folkestone), Herne Bay and Gravesend. There are about 1,000 fires caused by faulty electric blankets every year, with about 20 people are killed and 250 are injured. Elderly people are particularly vulnerable.

Flooding in Oxford and Abingdon - Harris

The water level was clearly rising sharply when I left Osney Island at 3 o'clock on Tuesday of this week to go to Parliament to hear the Environment Secretary, Hilary Benn's, statement on flooding, respond to it, and then meet him afterwards. I was therefore surprised to hear Mr Benn say in his statement that not only had the Thames in Abingdon flooded on Monday night (it hadn't, the River Oxon had flooded on Saturday night!), but also that he anticipated no additional, significant flooding in Oxfordshire.
