Councillor Rush slams Health Secretary

Heywood North Councillor Peter Rush has slammed Health Secretary Alan Johnson for "ignoring Heywood". Councillor Rush sent dozens of petitions signed by Heywood residents to Mr Johnson just before his controversial decision to axe hospital services. The petition made the plea to keep maternity and the special care baby unit at Fairfield.

MP succeeds in Bluebird bid

Local MP Tim Farron ran the 15km Puma Trailfox Trail last Saturday to raise money for the Bluebird Project at the John Ruskin Museum. During the race, which began at 12 noon, Tim ran all the way from Coniston Hall, through Coniston before going part way up Conistion Old Man. The route then took him back to Coniston Hall via Torver.

Ashley Avenue Temporary Road Closure

Kent County Council has announced that due to proposed junction improvement works on the Ashley Avenue/Cheriton High Street junction in Cheriton, Folkestone, there will be a road closure on Ashley Avenue from the junction with Cheriton High Street to the access with All Soul's Church Vicarage from 22nd October for around 4 weeks.

Liberal Democrats table Fixed-Term Parliaments Bill in House of Commons

Liberal Democrats today tabled a Bill in the House of Commons to introduce fixed parliamentary terms of four years. The Bill would fix the date of the next general election (as 7 May 2009) and all subsequent general elections (four yearly intervals, on the first Thursday in May), forbid the dissolution of Parliament at times between those dates and allow the House of Commons to change the day of the week on which general elections are held. The Bill has been tabled by Liberal Democrat Shadow Solicitor General, David Howarth MP.
