End to unreasonable stop-and-search

Commenting on the Home Secretary's announcement that stop and search powers will be subject to stricter conditions, Tom Brake MP, Co-Chair of the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Committee for Home Affairs, Justice and Equality, said "This is a very welcome announcement. Section 44 was an unreasonable power, applied in an indiscriminate way."

Simon Wright one of three MPs named as a fitbug champion

Simon Wright, MP for Norwich South, has won the 'Bupa Fitbug Parliamentary challenge on behalf of the Liberal Democrats, with two other MPs winning for their parties: Rt Hon David Davis (Conservative) and Fiona Mactaggart MP (Labour). Members of Parliament were challenged to walk the most steps over two weeks in the hope of winning a £1,000 Bupa donation to a local charity of their choice.

Once again the Cinque Port Dignitaries gathered at the invitation of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports at Walmer Castle. Lord Boyce hosted a function to enable him to meet the newly elected Mayors and to speak of the plans for the area.

A Statement on Schools Following the Government Announcement on BSF This Week

The plan approved by the Full Council to re-organise the schools structure as a two-tier system was dependent on funding through the Building Schools for the Future programme. This will therefore not be going ahead, and the Council will not be pursuing a comprehensive restructuring. So, while there is huge disappointment at the loss of the BSF Funding and the halting of the previous agreed plan, our focus is now on the future and on improving education in Bedford Borough.
