The number of students who achieved good GCSE passes at New College in New Parks has more than trebled in a year.

Students across Leicester have recorded their best-ever GCSE results. Provisional results show that the number of students achieving 5 A*-Cs has risen from 45.6% in 2005 to 49% this year - an increase of 3.4%.

At the stroke of midnight, Cinderella will have to go home in the dark

Cash-strapped Conservatives at Essex County Council have agreed to go ahead with their plans to turn off street lights at midnight across Essex in a bid to put a lid on rising electricity costs. People enjoying a night out will have to keep their wits about them when they find themselves plunged into darkness on their journey home.

GIVE PUBLIC LIBRARIES BREATH OF LIFE

Only days after launching a national Love Libraries campaign, the Government demonstrated it had very much fallen out of love with libraries. In its new cultural participation target, the Government consigned the invaluable cultural role of libraries to the dustbin by recognising buying books but not borrowing them from public libraries.
