Railfreight is Starting to Move Away from Diesel with Freightliner Looking for Greener Efficiency

Freightliner, a railfreight company that specialises in regular scheduled trains of a standard length between dedicated freight terminals, is now owned by Genesee & Wyoming Inc, an American rail holding company operating on 116 owned or leased rail lines in the US and Canada and national rail networks in Europe and the UK. Freightliner UK has recently acquired 13 Class 90 locomotives from Porterbrook Leasing to complement its existing 10 locomotives and 90014 is the second such locomotive to be repainted in the G&W livery.

Responding to the Investigatory Powers Tribunal ruling yesterday which found that UK security agencies unlawfully collected data of British citizens for over a decade, Liberal Democrat Home Affairs Spokesperson Alistair Carmichael said: "Allowing the state to collect endless amounts of personal data is not just a gross invasion of a privacy, it is a waste of precious resources.

Bees Still in Decline Due to Insecticide Use - as the UK Works Hard to Undermine EU Restrictions

Bees are crucial to the pollination of crops and to agricultural efficiency. However they are under threat from a number of chemicals - some in a quite unexpected manner. For example selective herbicides and fertilizer might not be expected to hurt bees at all. However spray drift from herbicides and fertilizer run off from the crop areas have led to field margins becoming dominated by a sparse vegetation composed of coarse grasses, nettles, docks and hogweed. Few flowering plants thrive here and bees have insufficient blossom to feed from.
