Empty homes money could make a massive difference in Cumbria

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has welcomed government financial support to try and deal with empty homes in Cumbria. Tim hopes that councils throughout the county will bid for part of the £300m pot. In South Lakeland we have an estimated 1,000 homes currently lying empty.

Visiting Flood-Affected Areas

Yesterday I went out and about to see some of the areas in the Borough worst-affected by the floods, or at least some of those which were accessible. There has obviously been real disruption for many people, and I spoke to people about how they are prepared for the high waters, and how it has affected them locally. One of the places I visited was Bromham which, as you may be able to see in the photo with Herons Mead resident Mr Webb on the right, has seen very high levels on the river. None of the homes had been flooded, although I visited some properties where the water has come perilously close.

An answer to a question from Surrey County Council's Liberal Democrat Communities spokesperson Councillor John Orrick to the County's Conservative Cabinet today has confirmed that the Liberal Democrats were right to raise concerns about co-operation across the County's borders over fire and rescue provision.

This afternoon, South Lakes MP Tim Farron, alongside the Leader of South Lakeland District Council, Peter Thornton and NFU Secretary Derek Lomax, his wife Mary and local farmer Michael Packham took their petition demanding a fair deal for dairy farmers to Number 10, Downing Street.
