A Safer City For All

Good news for all with the release of the latest set of crime figures. Reported crime has continued to fall every year since 2004/5. From a high of 36.232 down to 26,128 crimes in 2009/10. Further good news is that figures for 10/11 show a downward trend - down a further 8.2% from April to December.

Saint Ann’s Community Hut Repairs

Copper pipes providing gas to St Ann's Community Centre were stolen by thieves a few months ago, leaving users of the hut without heating or hot water, with winter approaching.

More Protection For Family Homes

Your Lib Dem run council made the decision in December to implement new legislation which will protect family homes across eight areas of the city, including Ouseburn Ward. The new rules will mean that landlords must seek planning permission to convert family homes into Houses of Multiple Occupation (HMOs) with up to 6 tenants within these designated areas. HMOs with 7 or more tenants will continue to require planning permission no matter where they are in the city. In Ouseburn Ward, all of Heaton Neighbourhood within the ward will be covered and much of Shieldfield is also included.

Improving Local Safety

Work is continuing to install metal fencing around the fronts of the mid-rise flats in the Leazes area of Newburn ward. Fortunately YHN have been able to extend their original plans and include more residences in the programme thanks to some match funding provided by the Newburn Ward Committee.

A Lib Dem County Councillor has raised questions about the future of Youth Work in the County. Cllr Wright is concerned that the massive reductions in Youth Work will see a loss of capacity to help the County's young people.
