I was delighted to receive an email from the Department of Communities & Local Government yesterday morning carrying the excellent news that the local decision to refuse planning permission for the proposed waste plant at Twinwoods near Thurleigh has been upheld. This plant would have caused real disruption to local communities, creating an unacceptable increase in lorry traffic in nearby villages and harming the enviroment, working against efforts to increase recycling.
On Friday night, I am taking part in the King's Arms Project's 2012 'SleepOut 2012.' The King's Arms project is a Christian charity which supports homeless people in Bedford. It does fantastic work in support some of the most disadvantaged and vulnerable people in our community, and I am very pleased that it is one of the causes which will be benefitting from the fundraising activities of the Mayor's Charity throughout this year.
The Tory Secretary of State for Local Government, Eric Pickles, has criticised Councils for increases in Council tax for the coming year. He spoke of the Councils having a "moral duty" to freeze the levy.
