Party President Simon Hughes MP has welcomed the results of the local elections as a further sign that the Liberal Democrats are making progress in all areas of Britain. The final results saw the Tories with a net gain of 316 councillors and Labour with a net loss of 319. It is unfortunate that we made no progress in Congleton but nationally the Liberal Democrats had a net gain of two councillors and one additional council. The sixth term won by the Lib Dems in Sutton is a record for the party.

Commenting on the Rethink report A Cut Too Far, warning of the affects of NHS cuts on mental health services, Liberal Democrat Mental Health Campaigner, Simon Davey said:
An EU scheme to cut greenhouse gases undermined incentives for countries to pollute less, a report revealed today. The survey of the Union's emissions trading scheme (ETS) revealed major shortcomings in the initiative. Under the scheme, power stations, refineries and heavy industry across Europe were given a limit on how much CO2 they could emit. However, figures show that countries across Europe were given too many pollution allowances or permits by their governments, reducing incentives to cut pollution.
The government is to review whether "core British values" should become a compulsory part of the curriculum for all 11 to 16-year-olds in England.
