Tom Gordon MP: Small businesses “simply cannot afford” for the shoplifting spate to continue as offences jump by over 120% in 5 years
A total of 5,660 cases were recorded last year, up from 2,533 cases in 2020/21, a shocking increase of 123.45%. Just 23.52% of shoplifting cases recorded by North Yorkshire police in 2024/25 resulted in a charge.

North Herts Council passed a motion on Thursday 23 April aimed at protecting the district’s precious chalk streams. Liberal Democrat Cllr Tom Tyson presented the motion, which was seconded by Cllr Louise Peace (LD).
